Frank Zappa and his wife, Gail, moved into the Log Cabin in 1968. They lived there less than a year. Many celebrities visited the home during their stay, which led them to find a more private residence.
The Laurel Tavern was built around 1915. It was a place for gentlemen to get away for drink and relaxation. It later became known as the Log Cabin when it was owned by developer, Alvaro A. Pratt. The Log Cabin burned down on Halloween night in 1981.
The Zappa Tree House was located north of the Log Cabin on Laurel Canyon. It was not designed and/or built by Robert Byrd. Byrd lived in his own unique "Tree House" just up the road on Lookout Mountain, where a large tree grew through the roof of his house.
Robert Byrd was a neighbor of the Log Cabin property located at the corner of Laurel Canyon and Lookout Mountain in the Hollywood Hills. Byrd did not design any of these homes. He modified the home he lived in and made it look very much like a Byrd home.
The storied history of this corner lot has seen a number of inaccurate accounts published in books, magazines, newspapers, and on websites—including that Robert Byrd designed and/or built these structures. Wikipedia is not always the best source for information.
Western actor and movie star, Tom Mix, lived in the Lob Cabin in the 1920s. He later purchased a mansion in Beverly Hills. His famous horse, Tony, was not buried on the Laurel Canyon property. Harry Houdini lived across the street from the Log Cabin.
